Handsome unsigned three quarter dark brown crushed levant, raised bands, spines gilt extra, t.e.g. Illustrated with twenty- two colored plates by H. Gronvold. Minor, faint surface scratch to one corner piece, otherwise a fine set. First edition, limited issue. One of two hundred sets, specially printed on large, handmade paper, and signed by the author, in addition to three thousand sets for the U.K. and North America of the trade issue. As often, this set lacks the separate suite of offset reprintings of the plates that accompanied it upon publication. PAYNE A38c.

Rebacked in a light brown cloth with gold stamped lettering. Original covers are scuffed, and worn along edges. New end leaves. At top of title page is inked "Halifax, Nova Scotia" and a name, possible Edward Bland, and a date of March 1852. There is scattered inked and pencil marginalia, all neat and non-intrusive. The contents are otherwise generally clean, though show light smudges and just a little light foxing. To the lower blank portion of the last page of text is sewn pages 65-68 of "The Mails for New York," and a notation that the date may be1853 or54. The article is titled "Birds of Bermuda" with a note that the names are taken from the currently listed title. (Urocharis longicauda, Salvad.)Handcoloured lithograph by William Matthew Hart from John Gould's The Birds of New Guinea, London, 1875-88. William Matthew Hart (1830-1908) was a bird illustrator and lithographer who worked for John Gould from 1851. He began by making the patterns for the lithographic plates for Gould's monograph on Hummingbirds, as well as working on The Birds of Great Britain with Henry Constantine Richter. By 1870 Hart had become Gould's chief artist and lithographer. After Gould's death in 1881, Hart was employed by Richard Bowdler-Sharpe of the British Museum to complete Gould's work on the Birds of New Guinea and to produce illustrations for Sharpe's great work Monograph on the Birds of Paradise.Large folio size lithograph (52cm x 34cm) mounted in a cream-coloured French matt (74cm x 54cm).
