About This Item

Richmond, 1862. unbound. 1 page (front and back), 8.25 x 7.75 inches (torn from larger sheet), Richmond, Virginia, letter dated March 27, 1862. This note is signed by the Confederate Brigadier General and commandant of the notorious Libby Prison during the Civil War, on the back of an appeal letter by a captain hoping to clear a soldier accused of disloyalty. The prison was for Union soldiers, and its next commandant, appointed on Winder's death, was hung for war crimes based on prisoner treatment there. From the letter: "This is to certify that Mr John Emmenhausen a resident of the city of Richmond Va. and who has been arrested and confined on the charge of disloyalty was a Sargeant in my company (K) 1st Regt. Va. Vols. and behaved himself very bravely in the engagements with the Enemy on July 8th & 21st 1861 and I have every reason to believe him to be a true southern man..." Winder's note on the back says, "What is Emmenhausen arrested for Jon H. Winder B.G." Uneven edge on the bottom of the letter; browning along natural folds. Very good(-) condition.
