The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. A collection of speeches spanning the years 1928 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy and warning prophetically of the coming danger. Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods called this book "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published." There was a single printing of the first edition, of only 5,000 copies. Offered here is a very good copy, structurally sound with some minor cosmetic compromises. The blue binding is clean, tight, and square with sharp corners and only trivial hints of shelf wear. The spine is faded as usual, but the gilt remains bright and legible. The rear cover shows some irregular sunning along the hinge. The contents are crisp, clean, and tight with absolutely no spotting. Nonetheless, the contents do show age-toning. The pamphlet is 4 pages in length and contains two excerpts from Churchill's House of Commons Speech of 24 February 1903 - the last of his famous six oratorical assaults on Brodrick's plan to expand the Army. In 1903 Winston Churchill was a brash new member of Parliament. Then Secretary of State for War, John Brodrick, had introduced a plan for expanding the peacetime Army. Brodrick was a fellow Conservative and Cabinet member. Churchill had been an Army officer and had partaken in four wars on three continents before election to Parliament in 1900. First edition, first impression, the working copy of the compiler, Churchill's son Randolph Churchill, with his bookplate to the front and rear pastedowns and his extensive pencil annotations and frequent excision of passages and leaves. It is probable Randolph was attacking the volume with an eye to producing an abridged edition. Seven leaves are entirely cut out, as are sections of six others; numerous pages are struck out with his pencil. Each speech is preceded by a section of relevant dates giving context. Randolph has ticked certain dates, and in one case sidelined an event and written "not this". If an abridgement was his purpose, no further such edition was published. Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Photographic half-tone frontispiece of the author.
