Description:
viii+514 pages with frontispiece map. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8 3/4") housed in a custom slipcase. Translated by Maurice Keatinge. First English edition.Bernal Dïaz del Castillo was a conquistador, who wrote an eyewitness account of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards under Hernan Cortes, himself serving as a rodelero under Cortes. Born in Medina del Campo (Spain), he came from a family of little wealth and he himself had received only a minimal education. He sailed to Cuba in 1514 to make his fortune, but after two years found few opportunities there. Much of the native population of the island had already been killed by epidemics and forced labor, and in 1517 an expedition was sent to the smaller Caribbean islands to find alternative sources of labor. Dïaz joined this group, under the command of Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It was a difficult venture, and although they discovered the Yucatan coast, by the time the expedition returned to Cuba they were in disastrous shape. Nevertheless, Dïaz… Read More

Paris: Ex typographia Matthaei Davidis, 1556. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. First Edition. 4to. pp. [12], 250, 14. Title page with woodcut printers device. Text printed italic font with sectional decorative initials. Interior pages are generally clean. A miniscule marginal tear is neatly sealed on the title page. A small pair of initials are lightly written in an old hand on the verso of the title. Bound in modern full calf with panels in blind after an early period style. Jean Picards "De Prisca Celtopaedia" discusses the development of language, arts and science in ancient Gaul. The author uses place names, ancient sources and epigraphic evidence to argue that the Greek language had originated in Gaul and that the Gallic Druids and Bards were developing philosophy, science and poetry long before other cultures. Picard claims that the Greek language was first brought to Greece by the Gauls as they travelled through those lands on the way to found new settlements…

xxxiii+270+[2]+15+[1]+48+xix+[1] pages 14 of 18 engraved plates, maps (many folding) and index. Quarto (10 1/4" x 8 1/4") in original leather binding. First edition.Richard Owen Cambridge was a British poet. He was educated at Eton and at St John's College, Oxford. Leaving the university without taking a degree, he took up residence at Lincolns Inn in 1737. Four years later he married, and went to live at his country seat of Whitminster, Gloucestershire. In 1751 he removed to Twickenham, where he enjoyed the society of many notable persons. Horace Walpole in his letters makes many jesting allusions to Cambridge in the character of news-monger. His chief work is the Scribleriad (1751), a mock epic poem, the hero of which is the Martinus Scriblerus of Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot and Jonathan Swift. The poem is preceded by a dissertation on the mock heroic, in which he avows Cervantes as his master. The satire shows considerable learning, and was eagerly read by literary people; but it never became…

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
